Ted Houser

Filmmaker and Film Festival Founder

Ted Houser is a filmmaker, film festival programmer and educator. Ted has over 15 years of experience in the film industry, working in Los Angeles in script development and post production, then in Detroit in production and festivals. After returning to Michigan in 2013, Ted founded Reverie Creative with his partner Kristine, and the two of them inspiring video for non-profit clients like The Kresge Foundation, Healing by Choice, and Youth Arts by Prescription. In addition to his independent work, Ted teaches film production at College for Creative Studies as an adjunct instructor, and also sits on the board of Digital Arts, Film & Television.

Ted's films have played at festivals around the country like the Virginia Film Festival, Cinetopia Film Festival, Capitol City Film Festival and many others.

His short films R. Stern and An America Abroad aim to reframe the narrative of the Global War on Terror. In addition, Ted executive produces numerous original short films commissioned for his festival, Film Blast, such as Moon in Taurus (dir by Kristine Patnugot and Toni Cunningham).

As a writer and director, Ted seeks to reframe the narrative of America's wars post-9/11.

Ted has worked extensively with the Detroit independent filmmaking community. He was a founding board member of the Detroit Film Society, launched in 2015. In 2018, he became the co-executive director of Short Film Block Party, a quarterly event that showcased short films made by local filmmakers. Ted served as Detroit Festival Coordinator of the Cinetopia Film Festival in 2019, showing films

Also helped coordinate a tribute to legendary visual effects pioneer Doug Trumbull.

Also in 2019, Ted curated a festival of Michigan-made horror and genre films called Mise-en-Scene Michigan. For the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Ted curated a festival of anti-war and pro-peace films called Against War!

In 2022, seeing many challenges to the independent film community, Ted created Film Blast Detroit, a festival that elevates the work of passionate local filmmakers. The festival works additionally as a meeting space for local film creatives and as a multimedia variety show, exhibiting video art and analogue media made by local artists. The Detroit Free Press has said "[Film Blast] brings unity to the film community and contributes to reviving its sense of fun" (Julie Hinds, 2022).
